How to Say You’re Vegetarian When Ordering Food in Chinese
Updated September 2026
Say 我吃素 (wǒ chī sù), 我不吃肉 (wǒ bù chī ròu), or 不要肉 (bú yào ròu), then point and add 我要这个. The freeze is not the label. The freeze is the confirm when they say the dish is fine — and you still need to check for meat.
Say the limit, then order the dish
Listicles stop at 我吃素. That line is useful. It is not an order. Staff hear “I eat vegetarian food” and may still bring a meat-heavy house dish, or a vegetable plate cooked with lard. You need a pair: dietary limit + point-and-order.
Same mouth as the rest of the cluster. 我要这个 chooses the plate. 不要辣 locks spice. 不要肉 locks meat the same way — short, spoken, before they leave the table.
Core lines
| Say | Pinyin | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| 我吃素 | wǒ chī sù | You introduce the limit |
| 我不吃肉 | wǒ bù chī ròu | You want the plain version: I don’t eat meat |
| 不要肉 | bú yào ròu | You are pointing at a specific dish |
| yǒu méiyǒu sù de | You need them to offer a vegetarian option |
| zhège yǒu ròu ma | You must confirm the plate in front of you |
| 我不吃猪肉 | wǒ bù chī zhūròu | Pork-only limit (common when traveling) |
| 我要这个 | wǒ yào zhège | You lock the dish after the check |
Pork-specific:
Many travelers are not vegetarian. They just cannot eat pork. Do not borrow 我吃素 for that. 素 tells the kitchen “vegetarian path.” Pork-only is narrower and clearer:
- 我不吃猪肉。 (wǒ bù chī zhūròu) — I don’t eat pork.
(bú yào zhūròu) — no pork in this dish.
(yǒu méiyǒu jīròu de) — is there a chicken one? Only if you actually eat chicken.
If pork is the only line you need, say that line twice: once as you sit, once when you point. Broth, dumplings, and minced filling hide pork. 这个有猪肉吗? is the confirm.
Freeze zone: they say
Staff smile and say 这个可以 (zhège kěyǐ) — this one is fine. Your brain hears “safe.” Your mouth still owes a check. 可以 means they think it works. It is not a lab test.
Look at the photo or the plate. Ask one more line:
- 这个有肉吗? — does this have meat?
(lǐmiàn yǒu ròu ma) — is there meat inside?
- If they say yes: 那不要。 — then no. Do you have a vegetarian one?
If you still cannot hear the answer, call 服务员 and repeat 我不吃肉. One person, one sentence. Do not switch to a long English speech in the aisle.
Mistakes
- Only the English word “vegetarian.” Some staff know it. Many do not. 我吃素 plus 不要肉 is the pair that survives noise.
- Assuming 菜 means vegan — or even vegetarian. 菜 (cài) is “dish” or “vegetable” depending on context. A 青菜 plate can still be fried with meat fat. 素 is the dietary word, and even 素 is not vegan.
- Stopping after 我吃素. That is the introduction. The order is still 我要这个,不要肉。
素 is not vegan. In restaurants, 素 usually means no obvious animal flesh. Egg, milk, lard, oyster sauce, or bone stock can still be there. If you need vegan, name what you cannot eat (蛋 dàn egg, 奶 nǎi milk, 荤油 hūnyóu lard) instead of hoping 素 covers it.
If they still bring meat
Stay seated. Catch a person. Do not eat around it and hope the next plate is better.
(bù hǎoyìsi, wǒ bù chī ròu) — sorry, I don’t eat meat.
- Point at the meat: 不要这个。
- 可以换一个素的吗? (kěyǐ huàn yí ge sù de ma) — can we change it for a vegetarian one?
You are not making a scene. You are finishing the same confirm you tried before the food left the kitchen.
A short table dialogue
You sit. Photo menu or QR, same mouth.
- They point at a green plate.
- They nod.
If you only skip pork: swap in 我不吃猪肉 / 不要猪肉 and ask 这个有猪肉吗? Do not say 我吃素 unless you mean the vegetarian path.
Tofu and greens are not automatic wins. 豆腐 (dòufu) and 青菜 (qīngcài) can be cooked with meat or meat oil. The confirm is still 这个有肉吗? Say it while pointing at the photo, not after the plate is already on the table if you can help it.
Pair spice the same visit if you need both: 我要这个,不要肉,不要辣。 Two 不要 chunks. Do not melt them into English.
FAQ
How do you say “I’m vegetarian” in Mandarin?
The restaurant line is 我吃素 (wǒ chī sù). Pair it with 我不吃肉 (wǒ bù chī ròu) and 不要肉 (bú yào ròu) when you point at a dish.
How do you ask if a dish has meat?
(zhège yǒu ròu ma) or 有没有素的? (yǒu méiyǒu sù de) for a vegetarian option.
Does 素 mean vegan?
No. 素 usually means no animal flesh. Egg, dairy, lard, or stock can still be in the dish. If you need vegan, say the items you cannot eat, not only 我吃素.
What if they still bring meat?
Stay at the table. Call 服务员 if you need a person. Point at the meat and repeat
