How to Say “I Can’t Eat Spicy” in Chinese: 我不能吃辣
Updated September 2026
Staff look up from the ticket and ask if a little heat is fine. 不要辣 tells them what to do to the dish. 我不能吃辣 tells them what you can eat. This page is that second line — the ability line — not another order-only script.
Ability line vs order line
| Ability (this page) | Order (sister pages) | |
|---|---|---|
| You mean | I can’t handle chili | Don’t put chili on this plate |
| Use when | They offer 微辣 or 一点点 | You are specifying the dish |
| Alone? | Explains you; the kitchen still needs an instruction | Instructs the plate; may not stop a “just a little” push |
Say the ability line when the conversation turns personal: 能吃辣吗? Can you eat spicy? Say the order line so the wok has a rule. Most tables need both, in that order, one breath.
Baseline “no spice” stays on 不要辣. “Absolutely none / 免辣” stays on 完全不要辣. Hearing 微辣 / 中辣 / 特辣 stays on 微辣 vs no spice. Do not rebuild those pages here.
The lines you say out loud
| # | Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 我不能吃辣 | wǒ bù néng chī là | I can’t eat spicy |
| 2 | 我吃不了辣 | wǒ chī bu liǎo là | I can’t handle spicy food |
| 3 | 完全不要辣 | wánquán bú yào là | Absolutely no spice (order — other page) |
| 4 | 不要辣 | bú yào là | No spice (order baseline) |
不能 (bù néng) is “not able.” 吃不了 (chī bu liǎo) is “can’t manage to eat / can’t handle.” Same job at the table. Pick the one your mouth can finish, and use it every time they push.
Speak drill, then the order
- Say 我不能吃辣 three times, eyes off the screen.
- Say the twin once: 我吃不了辣.
- Attach a dish:
- Close with the kitchen instruction: 完全不要辣 or 不要辣.
The pointing piece is 我要这个. If nobody is at the table yet, call 服务员 first, then the limit.
They still offer a little — freeze zone
← freeze zone
Both questions are a request to accept heat. Pre-load the no:
- Twin shape:
- Do not answer 可以 or 一点点就行 if the limit is real.
一点点 sounds small. It is still chili. Decline it with the ability line, then the order line, before they write 微辣 on the ticket. How to hear the rest of the ladder: 微辣 vs no spice.
What this page does not claim
This is a speaking line for a heat limit. It is not a diagnosis, and it is not the allergy script. If you must name a garnish or another ingredient — cilantro, peanut, and the rest — use food allergy phrases. Do not borrow 我不能吃辣 as a stand-in for 过敏. Spice tolerance and an allergy are different sentences.
If the plate must be zero chili, add the order escalation on absolutely no spice: 完全不要辣 or 免辣. First-time “no spice” can stay the shorter 不要辣.
3 mistakes
- Only saying 不要辣 when they ask about you. 能吃辣吗? wants 我不能吃辣, then the order line.
- Treating 我吃不了辣 as a different request. It is the twin. Same limit. Don’t switch lines mid-sentence and stall.
- Stopping after the ability line. Staff can still cook a default-spicy dish.
FAQ
How do you say I can't eat spicy in Mandarin?
Say 我不能吃辣 (wǒ bù néng chī là). It tells staff you cannot eat spicy food. Use it when they suggest a little chili. It is a limit, not only a preference about one dish.
What's the difference between 我不能吃辣 and 不要辣?
我不能吃辣 is about you: I can’t eat spicy. 不要辣 is about the plate: don’t put chili on this. Say the ability line when they push heat. Say the order line so the kitchen has an instruction. They are a pair, not substitutes.
Is 我吃不了辣 the same meaning?
Yes for this job. 我吃不了辣 (wǒ chī bu liǎo là) means I can’t handle spicy food. 不能 is not able. 吃不了 is can’t manage to eat. Either line works when staff offer just a little. Pick one and say it cleanly.
What do I say if they offer 微辣 anyway?
Lead with the limit: 我不能吃辣 or 我吃不了辣. Then close the order: 完全不要辣 or 不要辣. Do not answer 可以 to 微辣可以吗 if you cannot eat heat. 一点点 is still a yes to chili — decline it.
Should I also say 完全不要辣 when I order?
Yes. 完全不要辣 tells them what to do to the dish. Say both in one breath: 我要这个,我不能吃辣,完全不要辣。 The escalation line has its own page if 不要辣 already failed.
Practice the limit out loud
Say 我不能吃辣 once, then 完全不要辣 without looking. That pair is the answer to 一点点?
Practice today’s line · no card
Say 我不能吃辣 on Today before someone offers 微辣 (no card).
